Simply Color?

Color is everywhere, it surrounds us. But, is there really anything simple to color? What is color anyway? We see it everywhere, but what makes it?

Wikipedia defines color as “the visual perceptual property corresponding in humans to the categories called red, blue, yellow, green and others”.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines color as “a : a phenomenon of light (as red, brown, pink, or gray) or visual perception that enables one to differentiate otherwise identical objects b : the aspect of objects and light sources that may be described in terms of hue, lightness, and saturation for objects and hue, brightness, and saturation for light sources c : a hue as contrasted with black, white, or gray”.

Now, from what I see in these definitions, there’s NOTHING simple about color. We’re talking science speak there. If you really want to dive deep into color, just go to Wikipedia and read the physics, perception, and medical aspects of color, and you will have years of internet rabbit holes to follow.

So why have a series about Simply Color on a needlework designer’s blog?

Because color is EVERYTHING when choosing your next needlework project. The color choices made when beginning a needlework project, whether in the thread, fabric, or accessories, can change the entire look and feel of that project.

What’s simple about color in a needlework project?

Well, it’s simply the choice of the stitcher what colors and color combinations to use. Yes, needlework charts come with prescribed thread or fabric choices shown on them. We designers sometimes spend hours trying to decide exactly the right color combinations we want to show for each design. But you, the stitcher, do not have to stitch that piece in those exact colors. Yes, I just said that… Choose colors that you love. Choose colors that evoke certain emotions or memories. Take that needlework project and truly make it your own creation by deciding what you want to use.

To me that’s what’s simple about it, your choices in threads and fabric make each stitched needlework piece your own work of art.

In the following weeks and months, I’m going to dive into color with you, and look forward to seeing what we discover and create. Yes, I am going to dive in a little bit into the science of color. I’m a nerd in many ways, and I love that aspect of it. But, I’m also going to be sharing lots of color inspiration with you, that you can then take right into your needlework projects.

Both here at the Stitchin’spiration website, and on the Stitchin’spiration Pinterest board, you’ll find plenty of inspiration to get started on your own, as well as lots of thread and color combinations to take right into your projects. Don’t forget to stop by my For the Love of Color Pinterest board to see what I’m being inspired by as well.
